What Donations Food Banks Need the Most This Summer

By July 15, 2025 No Comments
While it is always best to ask your local food bank what they are most in need of before donating, here are some ideas to get you started.

Summer is a challenging time for food banks as more families turn to them to supplement the meals their children would normally receive at school. In addition, cuts made to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program will place a new strain on food banks. Throughout the coming months, donations will be needed more than ever. While it is always best to ask your local food bank what they are most in need of before donating, here are some ideas to get you started.

Shelf-stable Items

Food banks are always looking for shelf-stable foods like canned vegetables, canned fruits, canned meats, pasta, rice, peanut butter, and condiments. Throwing in some seasonings with your donation can make a big difference to families in need that may not have spices to go with their meals. Cooking oils, granola bars, and nuts are also less donated but much-needed items. It may be more difficult for food banks to purchase some items, such as canned food, if the price increases due to tariffs, so keep items like those in mind as you consider your donation. Make sure to only donate food that has not reached its “sell-by” date.

Fresh Produce

Some food banks accept fresh produce or other items in need of refrigeration, but make sure to check beforehand, as these items may be difficult to store. Fresh fruits and vegetables are often welcome additions to donations and provide essential nutrition for those who receive them. When donating these items, always check to make sure that none are old or beginning to decay.

Monetary Donations

The most versatile donation will always be a monetary one. All donations are needed and appreciated by food banks, but monetary donations allow for the most flexibility and can be used to cover things like energy expenses and other administrative costs. These donations also give food banks the ability to buy any food they may be missing. Food banks buy food in bulk, which allows them to stretch donations to provide more meals per dollar than you might expect.

As the demand on food banks continues to increase, donations are more important than ever, especially during the summer months. In addition to checking out our list, reaching out to your local food bank is the best way to make sure you include their most needed items in your donation. To further support the fight against childhood hunger in your community, consider volunteering or getting involved in local service projects and food drives.
